Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and little Baby Bear were mighty hungry after their morning ride. But when they returned to their beautiful Victorian home, it was in a terrible state! Their porridge, left cooling on the dining room table had been eaten. Baby Bear’s chair was broken into little pieces. And upstairs the intruder still slept. Who would have thought that one little girl could cause such pandemonium?
James Marshall, original and irreverent as always, enriches this familiar tale with inventive touches that will have readers ---both young and old ---clutching their sides with merriment.
Some picture books are much too hard. Some picture books are much too soft. But James Marshall’s Goldilocks is just right.

グリム童話『ヘンゼルとグレーテル』。

なんかこのイラスト見たことあるなあ。
昔から知っているような気がする~。

Perhaps the most profound of all the tales of the Brothers Grimm, for years Hansel and Gretel has held readers of all ages spellbound.
Now James Marshall has fashioned this classic tale in his own inimitable style. At times comical, at times moving, but always inventive, Mr. Marshall has heightened the humor to enrich and illuminate a deeper, more poignant, dimension of the tale.
Abandoned in the woods but finding the strength and courage to survive, Hansel and Gretel have never appeared so innocent, so vulnerable, so deliciously plump. And never has the witch been so dastardly, so ugly, so overdressed.
James Marshall’s many fans ----both young and older ---will cheer Hansel and Gretel on in the perfect follow-up to his award-winning tales: Red Riding Hood; Goldilocks and the Three Bears, a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book; and The Three Little Pigs (all Dial).

With a rackety revving of motors, a daring dash, and a wondrous wowing wave, it’s …Jasper Raisintoast, racing up the river in his speedboat! The day begins early for Jasper when, leaving his pal Tweedy-Jones behind (after all, friends don’t have to like the same things), he’s off in his speedy craft for a series of aquatic adventures. Raisintoast is in and out of mischief all day while, back at home, the hearth-loving Tweedy-Jones manages to have a high-flying adventure of his own. The eight chapters of the eventful day end, however, with the two friends safely reunited over a tasty meal of mutton and roast potatoes. In this tiny novel about a day in the life of two great pals, James Marshall exhibits once again his own admirable brand of delightful zaniness.

Marriage Secrets Of Highly Successful Couples

Hooray! George and Martha are back. Long live the world’s greatest friends. Or Vive les hippopotames! as George might have said if he had ever finished Martha’s French lesson. As it turned out, however, he never got past how to say “Give me a kiss.” And somehow, friend Martha wasn’t one bit surprised.
Thought she doesn’t succeed in teaching George much French, Martha’s Dance of the happy Butterfly does overcome his reservations about the performing arts, and she knows, too, how to bring a smile to her friend’s eyes when he’s feeling dejected. In return, George kindly refrains from saying “I told you so” in an uncomfortable situation , and all ends gaily in the only garden that has ever truly bloomed on love alone.
These five sparkling new mini-stories about an exquisite friendship are full of carefree touches that combine to make this another high point in JIM MARSHALL’s growing list of books (which includes the original GEORGE AND MORTHA). The charm of his art rests in a delight with the uproarious problems posed by a delicate spirit in an outsize body, and his sensitive humor is ever underscored by a warm-hearted appreciation of the best qualities of human (and hippo) nature.

Emily Pig’s problems begin when her friend Eugene comes by selling Popsicles.
Of course Emily can’t resist. She indulges herself, but then Eugene asks her to pay up.
“I thought we were friends!” says Emily.
“This is business,” says Eugene.
And so Emily sets off to earn enough money to pay Eugene, but it’s not easy when there’s so much delicious food everywhere.

This is the continuing chronicle of Emily and her friend Eugene, who have appeared in What’s the Matter with Carruthers? and the original Yummers! Here they are joined by a new cast of characters, including Uncle Fatty and Healthy Harriet.

In which Emily Pig and Eugene Turtle go walking one day. Emily has decided that she simply doesn’t care for jumping rope as a way to lose weight, and bedsides, her best friend Eugene has a better idea. “What don’t you come for a nice long stroll with me? Walking is the best exercise of all.”
This sounds sensible, but the walk soon proves to be the merest preamble to a peripatetic feast. Sandwiches, corn-on-the cob, scones, eskimo pies, Girl Scout cookies, banana splits --- Emily floats entranced from one mouth-watering snack to another, and dear Eugene provides an obliging, if slightly bewildered, companion.
With her wholehearted and joyous abandon of resolutions just made, Emily Pig is sure to endear herself to everyone whose will has ever weakened, and Eugene, the essence of quiet tact and innocent friendship, is the perfect companion for such a spree. (who previously appeared in What’s the Matter with Carruthers?) attest once again to James Marshall’s sharp insight and delicate sense of humor in this deliciously funny tale of temptation and good intentions.

イラストはかわいいですが、ストーリーはそのままです。
怖いお話に猫いっぱいのほのぼのしたイラスト。

Mother always told Red Riding Hood not to talk to strangers. But the wolf she met on the way to Granny’s was so charming and urbane. What could be the harm of telling him that she was on her way to Granny’s pretty yellow house on the other side of the woods? Who could be a better escort than the big-eyed, long-armed, big-toothed wolf?
The inimitable James Marshall, whom Publishers Weekly described as a “specialist in absurdity,” embellishes a familiar tale with irreverent flourishes that will have young readers ---and their elders as well ---rolling with laughter all the way through to the madcap finale.
